Love for the Word

"Blessed is he who read and those who hear the words of the prophecy, and heed the things which are written in it; for the time is near." - Revelation 1:3 NASB

By the time he was only five years old, John Bois already had read the entire Bible. By the age of six, he was writing in Hebrew. In 1575, when he entered St. John's College in Cambridge, England he was only 14 but knew more Greek than any scholar at the college. Bois continued to develop these extraordinary gifts and eventually became a professor at the school.

Because of his knowledge of ancient languages and love for the Bible, Bois was a natural selection to be among those chose to translate the King James Bible. It was a project that consumed him for four years. Bois was assigned to work on the Apocrypha. Then he was named to the group that reviewed the entire translation, keeping the notes for this crucial committee.

Whenever this committee met, one person would read the translation aloud while others compared the words with Bibles in French, Spanish, Italian, Greek, or Hebrew. They listened intently, interrupting for discussion if there were questions or problems. Emerging from this process, the King James Bible was especially designed to be read aloud.

Bois and these translators knew the importance of reading the Bible. At the beginning of this new year, we need to remember the power of reading God's Word-whether we read silently or aloud, or listen to others read it. The Bible promises a blessing to those who read it and obey what it says.

Today, make a commitment to know God's Word. Study it. Fill your mind with it. Speak it, and declare it to be true.

Read the Bible cover-to-cover. Read it aloud, and listen to it. These words will give you life!

Prayer:
Father, give me a greater love for Your Word. Transform me when I read the Bible. Open my mind and heart to understand the deep things of Your Word. Thank You. In Jesus's name.
Amen.
